Why do I need to clean my eavestroughs?

An eavestrough- or gutter is designed to collect rainwater from the roof and carry it away from the foundation of the home through downspouts. Since both the eavestrough and downspouts need to be clear in order to carry out this task, having a clogged system could cause an overflow of water.

If the water has nowhere to go, it will naturally fill up the eaves and eventually overflow onto the foundation of the home– and it won’t stop there! Depending on the amount of water and the condition of the foundation, water could seep into your basement or crawl space. Foundation repair alone could cost upwards of $10,000, and if water leaks into your basement, your home could be at risk of mold or further basement repairs.

Clogged eavestroughs can also pose a weight strain on your roof and the fascia (the boards behind the trough). If they are too full- it’s possible to collapse off the roof of your home, causing damage to the shingles of the roof and the exterior of the house.

Granular loss Over time, loss from your roof shingles, combined with dirt and debris, can accumulate in your eavestroughs, creating a thick, sludge-like buildup. This obstruction restricts the flow of water, preventing your gutters and downpipes from efficiently draining water away from your roof and home. Many homeowners are unaware of this issue, often assuming that eavestrough cleaning isn't necessary unless they have nearby trees. However, drainage problems such as overflows, leaks, and water damage can occur unexpectedly, leaving homeowners surprised to learn that eavestrough maintenance is essential—even without trees nearby

To summarize: A routine cleaning of your eavestrough can prevent damage to your roof, exterior and foundation, saving you in possible future repair costs.
